Rule 0 Conversations Now Include Lore Primer For Your Commander’s IP

In a post on their social media accounts, Wizards of the Coast today announced that, due to the increased volume of intellectual properties being brought into Magic: The Gathering via Universes Beyond, all Commander games going forward should begin with an explanation of your commander’s lore.

Universes Beyond has brought to Magic such big and profitable IPs as Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Walking Dead, and The Office. But with this deluge of IP-based content, some Magic players might not know who any of these other-universe characters are. Wizards hopes their Rule 0 conversation suggestions will help fill in the gaps in player knowledge.

“Starting today, you should help players around the table learn about your Universes Beyond cards and Commanders with a simple lore primer during Rule 0 conversations,” begin the instructions sent out by WOTC. “Take time to give the basics, such as character names and genders, places of origin, and any powers they may have that we at Wizards have masterfully translated into Magic: The Gathering card mechanics. Make sure to let everyone know how happy you are that a character you like is now a part of Magic, and they’ll be sure to tell you the same!”

“Through a simple explanation you can have the other players learn about, for instance, Clara Oswald, and why she’s partnering with the Sixth Doctor (even though that makes no sense in a show like Dr. Who that prides itself on not making sense). With just a few short minutes of lecturing your opponents, they’ll not only be better prepared to understand the intricacies of your Commander, they might also become interested in the IP and buy more of our Universes Beyond products, which is all we really want in the end!”

At press time, internal memos revealed that Wizards is worried about making people read the source material for upcoming Homestuck Universes Beyond cards.
