Magic Community Outraged at Show of Good Sportsmanship at Worlds

BELLEVUE, WA — The conclusion of Magic: The Gathering World Championship for 2025 was packed full of drama for all the wrong reasons. The scandal began when eventual champion Seth Manfield, in full view of several judges, attempted to Quench a Deep Cavern Bats that was uncounterable due to opponent Akira Shibata having just played a Cavern of Souls. Seth had the audacity to request and be allowed to take that back and in an effete display of subservience to Big Manfield was granted it by the judges on scene. The discourse hit the internet like a freight train.

Users were quick to speak for Akira Shibata, who in the moment raised no concerns despite having full agency and his wits about him. This only served to incense commentators further, some going so far as to question whether this was a display of sportsmanship for a fellow competitor or a moral failing that would be a scarlet letter on Shibata’s resume.

I just dont know how a guy like that can sleep at night knowing he let his opponent win like that. If my wife showed me that sort of common kindness I’d divorce her. said u/divorceddad69 on reddit. The WotC fix is in. This was always going to happen when Universes Beyond was allowed to go unchecked. I haven’t been happy since 1996. read a follow up comment.

Moderators of major Discord Servers across the MtG-sphere have been on red alert to place these fully grown children in time out should things get out of hand. Commander’s Herald spoke with one such mod on the condition of anonymity, “We’ve lost a third of the active members to time-outs, man. I haven’t seen things this bad since (sic) wizzers of the coast tried to force Loot on us. We are hashtag Fleem Team in this server by the way.”

Seth Manfield and Akira Shibata were unavailable for comment due to being too busy enjoying all of their successes of this past weekend with their friends and loved ones. Shameful.
