Report: Wizards Got Soul Stone in Spider-Man Set By Sacrificing Half of Prerelease Attendance
This past weekend saw plenty of Prerelease events around the country for the new Marvel’s Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering set. However, it has been reported that many local game stores had small or non-existent crowds for the new comic book hero cards.
After being presented evidence, we here at Commander’s Herald can confirm that this is a byproduct of an issue Wizards of the Coast created by printing certain cards in the Spider-Man Set: they sacrificed half of their Prerelease audience for The Soul Stone.
As many saw in the documentary Avengers: Infinity War, getting The Soul Stone requires great sacrifice, usually of the things that you love. As Wizards loves the fans who pay lots of money for their game, they did what they had to do, even though the consequences were worse than they anticipated.
We’ve obtained a message from an anonymous source, containing an e-mail from WOTC spokesperson Trent Darby to various members of staff.
“The trip to Vormir was a success!” began Darby in the message. “We now have the ability to print powerful and lucrative copies of The Soul Stone in the Spider-Man set! Yes, we had to kill the passion of a few loyal MTG fans to do it, but as we all know, the stone demands a sacrifice. It was important that we had the ability to print the stones, and we believe that possible future revenue from some comic book fans is more important than guaranteed revenue from enfranchised players, so a decision was made.
The e-mail continues: “Sadly, I was informed of an issue by Red Skull (who was so nice guiding me to a treasure he himself could not possess). He said we had to give an even greater sacrifice to print the stone in Arena, and we were not willing to do that, so we can’t. It’s terrifying how IP licenses can transcend space and time. So now we have to come up with a Through the Omenpaths equivalent, like a rock on Bloomburrow or some shit, have R&D look into that”
