WotC Announces 2Aether 2Drift and Aetherdrift: Kamigawa Drift for 2026

Renton, WA - In anticipation of the success of Aetherdrift, the newest Magic: The Gathering set, which is scheduled to release on February 14th, the Magic design team is already looking ahead to the future. Head Magic designer Mark Rosewater teased that two "sequel sets" are on the horizon: 2Aether 2Drift, scheduled to release in February 2026, and Aetherdrift: Kamigawa Drift, coming in May of the same year.

"We know when we've got a hit on our hands," said Rosewater on his Magic: The Gathering Drift to Work Podcast, "And we're positive that Aetherdrift is going to make Ravnica look like Prophecy."

EDITOR'S NOTE: Throughout this article we made our best attempts at transcribing Mr. Rosewater's quotes, which were heavily obscured by the constant roar of what sounded like the engine of a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. Some parts were especially difficult, as the recording was frequently interrupted by the screeching of racing tires as they drifted through, from the sound of the honking and the shouts, extremely active public intersections.

Rosewater went on to preview some lore ideas they're exploring for "2A 2D."

"It's basically the same Ghirapur Grand Prix, but it takes place in a hot, tropical paradise," Rosewater breathlessly explained, "And there's NOS and everyone's gorgeous and Ludacris is there."

Despite repeated requests, WotC has not confirmed any of Mr. Rosewater's comments as official, though they did categorically deny that either set would be "Officially Sponsored by Corona" as Mark had claimed.

As for the playerbase, they are split on the announcement, though some have shown optimism.

"Honestly, I was sort of relieved," commented Reddit user u/Dimirihardlyknowir. "Every week he doesn't announce Universes Beyond: Funko Pops is a good week in my book."

Others are less enthused. In particular, many are concerned about how the lore of the new Kamigawa set would affect Magic canon.

"Kamigawa Drift is obviously set in the future, but we're not really going to show that in any meaningful way," Rosewater shouted while frantically shifting gears. "We are going to kill Jace there, but since it's in the future he can still be a major part of every set. And then years later we'll reveal that he was killed by Jason Statham. Yeah, Jason Statham! We learn that he and Garruk are buds in A/D 9."

At press time, Rosewater has refused requests to comment, insisting that he's "Too busy going through my Kamigawa block bulk and changing 'soulshift' to 'stick shift' like I wanted it to be in the first place."
