Magic's crossover with Marvel is set to continue later this year with Marvel's Spider-Man x Magic: The Gathering, and today the first few cards from that corssover were revealed.
News of Magic's immediate future is bounding through like a half-man, half-rhinoceros, with details of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Final Fantasy, and even late 2025's Avatar all being shared with the public over the past week, so it's somewhat of a surprise to see a handful of cards bearing everyone's favorite webslinger and his rogue's gallery here in March.
So what will the new Spider-Man release look like? Here are the details:
Marvel's Spider-Man x Magic: The Gathering carries a release date of Sept. 26, 2025 and will be a fully draftable, Standard-legal set, joining Final Fantasy in that regard as the second Universes Beyond release of the year to be Standard-legal.
We learned earlier in the week that the release would not feature the now-customary Commander decks, but instead will come packaged in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, Prerelease Kits, Welcome Boxes featuring themed mono-colored "beginner" decks, and Scene Boxes. The cards revealed today via IGN will be found in that latter release, which features six "scene cards" alongside three Play Boosters, six art cards and a display easel. The six borderless cards contained within the release can be combined to "make the scene."
And what are those borderless cards, exactly? Well, we now know:
That scene, if you're wondering, looks like this when the six cards are placed together:
With the official release of Marvel's Spider-Man x Magic: The Gathering still months away, this reveal is a small taste of what players can expect. The cards above, according to IGN's interview with Max McCall and Mark Rosewater, were designed with Commander in mind, while the set proper will feature a more Standard-focused angle. As a result, the Scene Box cards seen today seem somewhat underpowered from what players have grown accustomed to in modern Magic. But there's still plenty of time between now and release, and plenty of cards yet to be revealed.
Are there any out-of-the-box characters in the Spider-Man canon you're hoping to see in the set? Are you hoping, like me, for a Big Wheel card in September? Let us know in the comments!
