Magic Presents: Pride Announced For Local Game Stores

Josh Nelson • February 26, 2025

If you'll pardon the play on words, Wizards of the Coast has taken pride in their support of the LGBTQIA+ community. From Secret Lair: Pride Across the Multiverse to last year's Pride event, Wizards has shown their care when catering to players in this demographic. And now, they're planning a repeat event in the form of Magic Presents: Pride! What does this event mean for Commander in June 2025? Read on, as the details are all below!

According to the article on DailyMTG, Wizards of the Coast's main hub for Magic: The Gathering news and announcements, during the Magic Presents: Pride event, all legal Commanders are treated as though they had the Partner mechanic. This means players can play in these events with two commanders! The article goes on to clarify what this means:

For this event, you'll treat all eligible commanders as though they had the partner ability. Take your favorite legendary creatures (or qualifying planeswalkers) and build a deck with both at the helm. Looking for some ideas? Try pairing Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance

with Huatli, Poet of Unity
; or Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar
with Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion
. There are plenty of pairings for you to try, both canonical and non-canonical, so build what brings you the most joy!

This fun twist on the format rules leads to many cool interactions. But that's not all Wizards of the Coast is offering to players. The article continues by stating that, while supplies last, participants in this event will receive a promotional copy of Chromatic Lantern

. This promo is illustrated by David Alvarez and features the Planeswalker Niko Aris
, who is canonically nonbinary. The promo is in a Traditional Foil treatment.

Magic Presents: Pride in Recent Years

A similar Pride event occurred in June 2024. During the time leading up to that event, players expressed concerns about format stability for the sake of the event itself. However, feedback for this event proved positive, indicating that players had minimal issues with the partnered commanders. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, it indicated that many players had fun with this event. This is a likely reason for the return of Magic Presents: Pride.

This event runs from June 27th through June 29th of this year. Furthermore, this event is, as with all events, completely optional. Finally, only a specific set of countries can participate in this event, according to DailyMTG:

This event is available in the following regions: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

While it isn't quite in the exact spirit of the event, I'm personally hyped to try out Daretti, Scrap Savant

with Daretti, Rocketeer Engineer
. But let's open the floor to all of you. Are you excited for Magic Presents: Pride this year? What commanders will you pair together for this event? Do you think any of these possible combinations would be too strong for conventional Commander play? Sound off below!
