There's a new way to achieve your dream of becoming a Magic: The Gathering artist.

Wizards of the Coast announced yesterday portfolio submissions for art are now being accepted online for review.

The open call for portfolio submissions is open now until 4 p.m. (PST) on Monday, March 10, 2025. Artists can indicate whether they're interested in producing art for Dungeons & Dragons and/or Magic: The Gathering. There's no limit to the number of pieces that can be included in a portfolio, but artists are asked to show at least six examples of their best and most recent work.

Three categories of art are being pursued by Wizards of the Coast, including general illustration work.

Art directors are looking for "strong fundamentals in anatomy, mature rendering, materiality, use of color, proportions, figure-ground relationship, believable lighting, creative use of camera angle accross a broad range of styles. "In addition to final illustrations, we're also looking for representative examples of your whole creative process from references, thumbnail sketches, color comps, roughs, etc.; it's important to show that you can take feedback well and pivot direction as needed based on the vision of an art director."

It's noted that for those interested in Magic specifically, artists of all styles, not just "high fantasy realism," are encouraged to submit.

Also being considered is Concept Art work, showcasing thought process and problem-solving skills, use of reference and studies, and bringing a completed piece from ideation to final vision. Lastly, Cartographic Art work is also available for those with a focus on tactical, isometric or geographic maps.

Work must be of the artist's own hand and must not be collaborate work with another artist. Fan art, however, is accepted as long as the portfolio features work outside of strictly established IPs as well.

Probably most significant among the fine print of the submission listing is Wizards' stance on AI-generated art. By submitting, artists are representing to WotC that they did not use AI tools in the creation of any of the submitted work. Wizards will not consider any portfolio that contains work created with generative AI.

Will you be submitting a portfolio? We'd love to hear about your experience! Let us know below if you're throwing your hat into the ring.
