Commander Pod Upset Player’s Wolverine Deck Plays Itself
Toledo, OH – Local game store Brain Games hosts a weekly Commander night to encourage Magic: The Gathering players to congregate and test their Commanders against each other.
However controversy has shadowed a recent Commander night after a player was accused of letting a deck “play itself” with Wolverine, Best There Is as a Commander.
The issue started when local Magic player Melinda Hofst sat down with her newly-made deck which she claimed she made to prepare for the newly-released Wolverine video game she had not yet purchased but hoped to enjoy soon.
“Wolverine is and has always been one of my guys,” Melinda explained with a gruff voice. “When all the other girls were fighting over Team Jacob or Team Edward I was squarely Team Logan. I’ll buy anything with James Howlett’s sexy likeness on it so I was excited to pick up his card and make a deck with him.”
The deck in question rattled some feathers in Hofst’s Commander pod, where she was joined in a game by player Tim Minnidan.
“I didn’t think anything of it when Melinda showed off her Wolverine deck and said it was bracket 3,” Minnidan said, “so we all shuffled up and got to it. But the deck is a monster: it’s full of power-buffing abilities to make Wolverine huge, ways to protect him on top of his regeneration, and as many tutors as you can put in a Commander deck.
“All those tutors kinda suck the life out of the deck: you’re basically playing on autopilot, always picking the same spells over and over, and I can’t see how that would be fun. Plus the whole time she was playing the deck she narrated what she was doing and grunting when making plays, it was really off-putting.”
Hofst, though she constructed the deck, actually agrees with Minnidan and will probably deconstruct the deck soon.
“Yeah I’ve played like three games with this and I always win on turn 5 with a searched-for Temur Battle Rage. It’s really boring. When I play my vision goes weird and I see a strange blue cloud-like haze surrounding the cards I need to play next. Also my cards have this weird white paint on the sleeves; I can tell what card to draw, but they’re definitely marked.
“It’s really annoying and unfun and I hate it, so I’ll probably put my deck away and pick up that awesome new Wolverine game for Playstation; I haven’t read any reviews yet but it looks good!”
