Universes Beyond: Is Avatar The Unannounced 2025 Set?

Josh Nelson • January 6, 2025

On Monday, January 6th, Magic: Arena's online shop conducted a sale on various cosmetics themed around 2025 Magic expansion sets. However, on Reddit, users quickly pointed out that one of these cosmetic bundles was decidedly not like the others. Some of these bundles were explicitly themed after sets like AetherdriftTarkir: Dragonstorm, or even Spider-Man. The last one raised eyebrows, with its use of alchemical elements and cards with "bender" in their names. With Redditors now convinced that the last Universes Beyond set of 2025 is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, heavy speculation has begun on the truth of this set.

For full context, the following cards are receiving a cosmetic option in Arena, pertinent to the respective sets:

Aetherdrift

Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy

Edge of Eternities

Universes Beyond: Spider-Man

All of the above bundles make sense with their themes of the various set releases of 2025. However, the final unannounced set for the year also received a bundle accompanying it, as it would seem:

Unannounced 2025 Universes Beyond Set

These six cards either mention the four cardinal/alchemical elements or have "bender" in their names. Therefore, many internet sleuths on social media are taking this to be a "soft confirmation" of Avatar: The Last Airbender for the end of 2025. Additionally, ATLA is a Nickelodeon property (and therefore a Paramount property by extension). Furthermore, the SpongeBob SquarePants Universes Beyond tie-in is forthcoming. This means that Wizards of the Coast has already begun to make plans with Paramount and/or Viacom. That makes this speculation much less baseless than it could have been. Finally, ATLA is set to release a feature-length film in January 2026, pushed back from a 2025 release date (much like the return to Lorwyn, as it were).

"Marketing is in full push," says one Redditor on this Reddit thread speculating on the subject. "That's why I fully believe UB sets and secret lairs are going to be aligned mostly with the season/quarter new media launches," they speculate, "[...] for the most part mtg sets will be dictated by the larger media landscape."

We will update this information with more concrete details as they become available. Meanwhile, what do you think about this speculation? Would you be excited for Universes Beyond: Avatar: The Last Airbender? Or would you prefer something like Avatar: The Legend of Korra? Sound off below!
