The Best EDH Reprints from Innistrad Remastered
(Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord | Art by Martina Fačková)
Ravenous Reprints!
Hello, everyone! It's your friendly neighborhood Jesguy here, and today I bring you a list of my favorite reprints from Innistrad Remastered!
As some of you might know, Innistrad is my favorite plane (heck, I have an entire cube dedicated to it), so when I was asked to go through the set for some of the best reprints for EDH, I was ecstatic.
This set is chock full of goodness, from uncommons to mythics, there are tons of bangers here. So without wasting any more time, let's jump into the list!
...Is what I would like to say, but first, let's address the elephant(s) in the room.
The Freebies
Let's get the easiest reprints out of the way first. All of the stuff in this category are things that I have to obligatorily mention, but things I didn't want to add into my actual list.
Here you have your obviously good reprints. We have your Craterhoof Behemoth, and Edgar Markov, and Avacyn, Angel of Hope. We have your The Meathook Massacre, your Emrakul, the Promised End, and your Gisela, the Broken Blade. We even have all ten Slow Lands for you too!
These are all your chase cards, and all cards that people want to open packs for. Everyone knows these are in the set, everyone knows they're expensive and worth chasing. I don't feel like it does any good to make a list where over half the cards are obvious.
So, instead of focusing on these, let's try and find where the real value in Innistrad Remastered lies.
The Meat and Potatoes
Essence Flux
Let's start off this list with something a bit innocuous, shall we?
Essence Flux is blue's counterpart to Cloudshift, and both cards that are mainstays in Blink decks. At first it might be shocking that a card like this is sporting a $3 price tag...But considering that it is in over 53,000 decks on EDHREC, and that it's blue's only way to blink a creature for one mana, it begins to make a bit more sense.
In Shadows Over Innistrad, Essence Flux was at uncommon, but in Innistrad Remastered, it's been pushed to common, so with plenty of copies to go around it should crater its price significantly.
Conjurer's Closet
Speaking of Blink, next up we have another mainstay for that archetype, Conjurer's Closet!
While $10 for a closet might be a steal if you were looking to redecorate your house, that is not what I am hoping to pay when I need one in cardboard. Despite its multiple reprintings, this flickering furnishing just won't stay down! While it is a mana more expensive that current iterations it's still no slouch, seeing play in over 100,000 decks.
Here's hoping that with three separate printings in this set (regular retro, and borderless), it'll help make this a more affordable amenity.
Second Harvest
Tokens is one of the most popular archetypes in commander, so it's no surprise that Second Harvest was getting up there in price.
While it isn't Parallel Lives, which for some reason wasn't reprinted in this set, a one-shot version of it can still get the job done. Seeing play in over a whopping 116,000 decks, it's no wonder it's still been close to $6 even after so many printings! This will definitely be a good one to nab once the set hits the shelves, especially since it has two versions!
Hermit Druid
While not from any Innistrad set, we get Hermit Druid as a reprint here in Innistrad Remastered!
Ol' Hermie here is a solid little card, being an excellent addition to any kind of Self-Mill or Graveyard strategy, or in any deck that wants to combo off (if you are more competitive player). Thus far, Hermit Druid has only had three printings, its original in Stronghold, a judge promo, and a list reprint. A more widespread printing like this should do wonders for its price, making it affordable for any graveyard lover out there.
Hullbreaker Horror
After nine variants and four printings, if you told me Hullbreaker Horror was still $5, I would look at you confused, like you were a crustacean with ten, massive, meaty claws.
Yet here we are.
Hullbreaker Horror is not only the best Sea Creature in the format, but an excellent closer and Reanimator target, attesting to its massive inclusion in over 170,000 decks. If you've ever had to face down one of these briny blokes, you know how much of a game changer it can be once it hits the field. If you still have yet to pick one up for your salt watery shenanigans, now would be time!
Bloodline Keeper
Bloodline Keeper demands a $17 price tag for two reasons:
Vampires are the 4th most popular creature type in EDH (and this is an excellent Vampire kindred card), and double faced cards aren't the easiest to reprint outside of special sets like this one.
These two factors combine to make Bloodline Keeper quite the valuable card, and a welcomed reprint in Innistrad Remastered. If you're picking up a (newly reprinted) Edgar Markov for an EDH deck, make sure you snag a Bloodline Keeper too, since it will definitely be more affordable!
Cryptolith Rite
Earthcraft it is not, but it's the closest you'll get while the Reserve List is intact!
If you're a deck with a bunch of creatures or Tokens, Cryptolith Rite is going to be a consideration for you deck, even if it doesn't end up making the final cut. The ability to turn all your creatures into dorks is just so powerful.
This will be Cryptolith Rite's first reprinting, so I am interested to see where the price goes. Definitely a great pickup for any creature-based list!
Cathars' Crusade
Despite being incredibly hard to track and getting six printings, Cathars' Crusade has been holding at a solid $10.
Sitting at an inclusion rate of over 126,000 decks, Cathars' Crusade has made a name for itself as a (somewhat cumbersome) finisher in any decks with a lot of creatures or tokens, but especially in +1/+1 Counter lists. It can also be an excellent combo enabler as well, combining with cards like Ghave, Guru of Spores or Scurry Oak to make things get really out of hand, really fast.
It is certainly a card you want to have a copy of if you enjoy swelling your board to wild sizes!
Reforge the Soul
If you held a Holy Frazzle Cannon to my head, I would have never guessed that Reforge the Soul was a $6 card instead of a bulk rare.
What's even worse is, I haven't kept up with the fact that nearly all red Wheel effects are sitting around $5 apparently 🙈
Wheels decks are the eighth most popular archetype on EDHREC, attesting to its pieces' solid price. Combine these with some new cards like Scrawling Crawler and Razorkin Needlehead, and you'll have your opponents dead in no time...Even if you are drawing them a collective 21 cards!
Hopefully the reprint will bump it down a few bucks and make it the most accessible wheel effect for this strategy.
Laboratory Maniac
While he used to be a rare, Labman has seen the uncommon treatment once before, and hopefully it'll stay that way.
At the moment, Laboratory Maniac is approaching $7! At the time of its UMA release, it dipped to $1.50, so here's hoping its reprint in Innistrad Remastered causes its price to once again follow suit.
It's unsurprising that an iconic card like Laboratory Maniac is up there in price despite now being an uncommon; it's in over 111,000 decks, it's an alternate win condition, and it is the reason "lab man" effects are called "lab man" effects. It's a piece of history!
Overall, I think think, or at least hope, this reprint impacts the price in a big way. Everyone should be able to do a bit of mas science every once in a while.
Reviewed and Remastered
And there we have it! My favorite reprints from Innistrad Remastered!
What is wild here is that I only scratched the surface of valuable cards in the set. There are plenty of other 3+ dollar cards that I wasn't able to go over in this article.
Speaking of which, if you feel like there were any I missed out on, or a card that you don't think should have been on this list, make sure to let me know down in the comments below!
