Are ya ready, kids? The long-anticipated Secret Lair drop themed after Nickelodeon's acclaimed children's show SpongeBob Squarepants releases on Monday, March 24th!

The drop will feature sixteen reprinted cards and a Food token. But are any of these reprints any good, either thematically or in terms of gameplay? Let's take a deep dive into the Magic cards of Bikini Bottom!

Icons Of Secret Lair x SpongeBob Squarepants

To begin with, let's examine the many characters that pop culture news site Collider revealed earlier on Monday, March 10th. At the time of writing, we know of seven legendary creature cards reskinned as some of the various subaquatic characters of SpongeBob.

Some of these cards are almost certain to see some play in Commander. SpongeBob Squarepants, for one, is a reskin of Jodah, the Unifier.

While Jodah is largely a "flavor-of-the-month" kind of commander, his appeal is widespread and the fact that the titular sponge is a another portrayal of him might allow for some financial movement here.

Gary, the Snail, being a reskin of Toxrill, the Corrosive, will most certainly see play in more vicious Commander pods. Conversely, while the other cards are largely take-it-or-leave-it in application, Patrick Star will almost definitely not see play outside of thematic Bikini Bottom lists.

Even if Barktooth Warbeard hasn't seen a reprint since Chronicles, he's still a vanilla legendary creature, and generally, only thematic decks will use him.

Next, let's look at the five cards outside of the legendary creatures and basic lands. These cards are noncreature, nonland cards that truly do prove that memetics are a more-than-valid language in the world today.

We expect these cards to ultimately be a mint, so to speak, given their history as iconic images in meme culture:

Each of these cards has a moment in Internet culture where its illustration became a major meme. Somehow, SpongeBob Squarepants seems to have this effect on memetics where stills from the show stick in peoples' memories as relatable, iconic, and memorable overall. As such, we can see each of these cards being super-pricey on the secondary market.

SpongeBob Squarepants Basic Lands & Food Token

Finally, let's look at the basic lands from the set, as well as the Food token. Yes, the Food token is exactly what you expect it to be.

These scenic full-art basic lands showcase various iconic areas in the setting of the show. Jellyfish Fields, Bikini Bottom's cityscape, and to a lesser extent Rock Bottom and the Kelp Forest, will all be pretty sought-after due to the need to get these cards in multiples.

Mt. Bikini Bottom was not quite as prominent in the show, so this one we anticipate may fetch a lower price tag. Even so, the need to get multiples of each for decks is going to mean these will maintain a hefty cost on the secondary market overall.

As for the Krabby Patty Food token, this should reasonably be the most expensive Food token in the current Magic Universes Beyond lineup to-date.

This token shows an extremely iconic prop (for lack of a better term) used as a major driver of SpongeBob storylines, and few animated foods have more importance in television canon, if any.
