So, What's Your Type? - Decked Out EDH Gameplay Breakdown

VeggieWagon • April 4, 2023

Everyone's first deck was a creature deck. You picked your favorite type and ran with it: Ouphes, Brushwaggs, Homarids, all the favorites! That's where Magic started, and it's where it's headed today on Decked Out's latest episode, featuring AirBubbles and PowrDragn along with hosts MTGNerdGirl and VeggieWagon. It's a creature type feature fight! The players have chosen some of their favorites to represent in the head-to-head battle.

Suckers

AirBubbles brings her custom Vampire build with classic bloodsuckers cherry-picked from as far back as Mirage. Olivia Voldaren leads the deck, focusing on her ability to convert opponents' creatures into Vampires for her own use. A mix of life gain and removal means her Vamps can contend through the long game, when she just might control ALL the creatures on the board.

Squiggles

"I'm the bad guy." PowrDragn knows the reputation that precedes the Slivers, and he aims to remind everyone why they earned it. There are many choices for a Sliver commander: Sliver Queen, Sliver Overlord, or even Morophon, the Boundless, but PowrDragn is going with The First Sliver for maximum chaos. He's hoping the random Cascading Slivers will be the right combination to build an unstoppable hive.

People

What does it mean to be human? VeggieWagon has no idea, but he's hoping Katilda, Dawnhart Prime has a clue. It might have something to do with loads of +1/+1 counters and incredible value from cards like Laid to Rest. What Humans may lack in raw power, they make up for in survivability.

Gobbos

Reminiscent of her first deck ever, NerdGirl goes back to her goblin-y roots with Krenko, Mob Boss. Just like the creatures themselves, the plan is straightforward: slam Krenko, make a mountain of Goblins as fast as possible, and overwhelm the table with damage to the face. They might even get a little help from a Dwarf or a Construct here or there...

How It Played Out

My Precious! - The Early Game

As the Goblins will do, NerdGirl drops a turn 1 shiny: a Sol Ring. That means a turn 2 Krenko and a lot of work for the rest of the table to catch up. Veggie builds a solid board thanks to Katilda's mana ability and hopes a Bounty Agent survives the turn cycle to eliminate Krenko, but it's immediately burned out by NerdGirl to keep the Goblins flowing. Her honorary Goblin, Runaway Steam-Kin, helps push the tempo even faster with added mana from her red spells.

A Sliver of Hope - The Mid Game

PowrDragn finds Harmonic Sliver to pick off NerdGirl's threatening Cavalcade of Calamity as well as most of the other artifacts and enchantments on the board. Each player has cast at least enough creatures to make it hard for the Goblins to get through, and the addition of Shifting Sliver and Pulmonic Sliver turns the focus to PowrDragn. An alpha strike from AirBubbles goes awry when the Slivers tank most of the damage, then throw it all in NerdGirl's face via Spiteful Sliver. A few triggers from Lavabelly Sliver finishes the job. Goblins are out!

When Protection Fails - The End Game

AirBubbles brings in the queen herself, but Olivia Voldaren struggles to use her powerful abilities against Slivers that can bounce at instant speed with Hibernation Sliver. A Riders of Gavony presents Veggie with a touch choice: protection from Vampires or from Slivers? He chooses the latter and uses it to get some damage in to PowrDragn, but a little too late. Even together, Veggie and AirBubbles can't overcome the slippery lifelinking Sliver hive. Despite back-to-back removal spells targeting the key Sliver creatures, they both fall to their own damage from the Spiteful Sliver.

By the Numbers:

Sliver Cascades: 13

Goblins made: 24

Vampire masquerades: 0

Humans dismayed: 3 (the ones sitting at the table with PowrDragn)
