Secret Lair X Brain Dead: Multiple Drops Announced

Josh Nelson • July 17, 2024

Los Angeles-based creative collective Brain Dead and Wizards of the Coast have collaborated to produce three Secret Lair drops this summer! Secret Lair x Brain Dead is a relatively new collaboration, dating back to around the time Wizards started licensing the Magic brand to other companies. This drop series is part of the Inside An Elevator Superdrop, releasing later this month. These drops push the limits of the experimental nature of the medium. Still, some of the cards shown within are simultaneously, simply put, neat reprints.

This collaboration was a long time in the making. Initially, Brain Dead released a line of clothing with Magic: The Gathering-branded art, logos, and symbols on it. Their website features other forms of Magic-branded apparel, including totes and hats. You can see their website's store here.

Secret Lair X Brain Dead Press Release

According to the press release put out by Wizards of the Coast:

Magic: The Gathering announces its collaboration with Brain Dead, a Los Angeles-based collective of global artists and designers. The collective brings their defiant approach to creating art while mixing subcultures to Secret Lair across three disruptive drops: Creatures, Lands, and Staples. Secret Lair x Brain Dead will be part of the Inside an Elevator Superdrop and will be on sale from Monday, July 29 at 9 a.m. PDT to Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. PDT while supplies last.

In the Secret Lair x Brain Dead: Creatures drop, Brain Dead hand-picked some of their favorite game-changing creatures and then changed the game with the art and frames. This monster drop is unlike anything you've ever seen creep across your game table and includes:

(Author's note: This drop is notable as it marks the first reprint of Chaotic Goo, originally printed in Tempest.)

In the Secret Lair x Brain Dead: Lands drop, Brain Dead has designed two cycles of the most outlandish lands we've ever seen with awe-inspiring art and frames. Seeing these landscapes will leave the whole table breathless. The drop includes two different art pieces for each of the five land cards:

(Art by Gage Lindsten and Hank Reavis)

  • 2x Plains

  • 2x Island

  • 2x Swamp

  • 2x Mountain

  • 2x Forest

In the Secret Lair x Brain Dead: Staples drop, Brain Dead took Commander cards every player needs and made them as unexpected as possible. They'll fit in any deck and stand out at every table. This includes:

Not Brain Dead After All

Experimental aesthetics are one of the concepts that Secret Lair was originally billed to promote. While this drop undoubtedly pushes the bounds of what makes Magic: The Gathering cards look like they do, we are excited to see this Secret Lair drop hit the online store in late July. Is this a drop you'd buy? Sound off below!
