Secret Lair: Wizards Provides Update On "Chaos Vault"

Josh Nelson • January 10, 2025

On December 9th, the Secret Lair website released a drop called The Fairest Drop Of All, a drop themed after fantasy novel covers. These cards were all double-faced and sold at a lower rate than typical Secret Lair drops. However, the interesting thing about The Fairest Drop Of All wasn't its aesthetics, the cards involved, or its lowered price tag. Rather, it was billed as something called the "Chaos Vault".

All things considered, the mystery of the "Chaos Vault" was solved on Friday, January 10th, when Wizards of the Coast put out an article explaining the initiative. So, what exactly is the "Chaos Vault" initiative?

"Chaos Vault" - The Old Secret Lair Movement, Or Something New?

According to Wizards of the Coast's article on the subject, "Chaos Vault" is an additional, slightly weirder Secret Lair project. The article goes to say very little about what the initiative offers, but does say this about "Chaos Vault":

"Chaos" is right in the name, so you can expect the unexpected here--from launching sales at unusual times to experimentation to offering up unusual items (we heard you like hats)--the Chaos Vault will not disappoint those looking for a storefront with a little something extra.

This is probably where, if Wizards was actually legally permitted to sell them, you'd be able to get the infamous hatchet they teased during the Summer Superdrop, Camp Totally Safe. But we digress; this may be a spot for merch and for more bizarre card drops. In that way, it differs somewhat from the usual offerings.

The first card drop offered is illustrated by UK-based artist Scott Balmer. The gist is that there are five drops this time around, each with ten copies of a given basic land (sorry, Wastes fans and fans of snow lands, just the usual routine here). From there, Wizards has promised they'd make even weirder drops for the initiative. Until then, we will have to wait and see!

In the meantime, what do you think about this initiative? Is it exciting to you? Is it just a rebrand of Secret Lair in your eyes? Sound off below!
