NYCC And Its "Super" Magic Content

At Room 409 at about 3:30 EST, the panel began. The panelists involved in this event included the following figures:

  • Steve Sunu of Wizards of the Coast's Secret Lair team
  • Jesse Falcon from Marvel

The panel introduced a new Secret Lair superdrop, with special attention merited towards "super." In this announcement, we got five new drops, each themed after one iconic Marvel superhero.

Secret Lair x Marvel's Captain America

Justice, liberty, honor--these are the values Captain America protects with his shield held high. That's why each and every courageous card in this drop, including the all-new, legendary Captain America, is dedicated to protecting the downtrodden. Because it's not enough to just win your next Commander battle, you have to win the proper way. This drop features card art by Anthony Devine, Howard Lyon, Ryan Pancoast, Livia Prima, and Chris Rahn.

Captain America is a fun card with a really straightforward set of abilities. As a potential commander, Cap wants to command a deck with a glut of Equipment.

Fortunately, the drop contains cards like reskins of Sigarda's Aid and Sword of War and Peace. Notably, the latter is reskinned as "Shield of War and Peace," Cap's shield, and we have it on good information that it's going to look gorgeous in foil.

There is also a copy of In the Trenches, perfect to show Captain America during his World War II days of service.

Secret Lair x Marvel's Iron Man

Billionaire, genius, superhero, and now Secret Lair Drop--Tony Stark really has done it all. High-tech, low-drag, all power--this drop features sleek art and five cutting-edge cards, including an all-new legendary Iron Man card, that will put you into the armor of one of the Avengers' most inventive superheroes. This drop features card art by Bud Cook, Justyna Dura, Lie Setiawan, Anna Steinbauer, Marco Teixeira.

Iron Man is a Birthing Pod for artifacts, similar to Oswald Fiddlebender. However, he does so on attacking, and after he makes a Treasure token (included in the drop, depicted as Tony Stark's Iron Man mask).

Conveniently, being able to immediately sacrifice that Treasure token for an artifact with mana value one is accounted for in this drop as well. There is a Sol Ring included, but there's also a copy of Commander's Plate.

As far as financial value goes, for all it's worth, this drop is going to be the money drop as a result. There's also a copy of Inventors' Fair.

Secret Lair x Marvel's Wolverine

All right, bub... it's time to brawl. This deadly drop combines mutant healing factor with killer instincts to bring you five ferocious cards inspired by the X-Men's most relentless member, including an all-new, legendary Wolverine card. Grab this drop and the bones of your next Commander deck will be made of adamantium. Ain't no stinkin' way you'll lose. This drop features card art by Victor Adame Minguez, Alexander Mokhov, Anna Podedworna, Eliz Roxs.

Everyone's favorite tenured Canadian X-Man (no, not Deadpool, we said "tenured" - Sorry, Wade!) Logan, also known as Wolverine, makes his triumphant debut in his own Secret Lair drop. In a red-green color identity, his ferocity and affinity with the Canadian wilderness take center stage here.

He hits hard, stays alive due to a rare case of Wizards of the Coast printing the regenerate mechanic on his card, and he... well, he hits really hard.

He's the best at what he does, after all! This drop also includes a copy of Berserk and The Ozolith reskinned as Logan being augmented with his adamantium endoskeleton. This drop is also one to pay very special attention to financially.

Secret Lair x Marvel's Storm

Shutter the windows and head down to the cellar; Storm is coming. This gale-force drop features stunning artwork of Marvel's Storm across five fierce cards, including the all-new legendary Storm card. Summon the fury of the elements and turn the X-Men's most electric leader into your next commander. This drop features card art by Miguel Mercado, Francisco Miyara, Kevin Sidharta, Magali Villeneuve, Pauline Voss.

In a blue-red-green color identity, another member of the X-Men is represented in Storm. This commander is going to be something worth buying if you're a fan of the storm mechanic.

Giving Ororo double strike (for example, with Fireshrieker) will mean your next spell is going to do way more than you normally would expect.

But tactics aren't why you're here, so let's talk about the rest of the drop. They're all cards that work amazingly well in a Storm deck in any format. Jeska's Will (reskinned as Storm's Will), the first reprinting of Ice Storm in a modern card frame, Manamorphose (reskinned as "Ororo Borealis", an extremely clever Wizards of the Coast original that was greenlit by Marvel in the design process), and, of course, Lightning Bolt, all feature in the drop.

Secret Lair x Marvel's Black Panther

Leaping from the heart of Wakanda into the depths of Secret Lair, Black Panther is on the prowl. Featuring the alter ego of warrior king T'Challa, this drop brings the power of vibranium to bear across five majestic cards, including an all-new legendary Black Panther. Protect your people, punish your enemies, and preserve your position as commander and king. This drop features card art by Tyler Jacobson, Jake Murray, Ernanda Souza, Swayart, and Salvatorre Zee Yazzie.

Finally, let's discuss T'Challa, the Black Panther. His color identity is white-green, falling in line with his personality and worldview.

T'Challa's card cares about other creatures by way of caring about the land. T'Challa's drop insists on a go-wide strategy that also focuses on +1/+1 counters. It contains cards like Secure the Wastes and Heroic Intervention.

To assist players in casting Secure the Wastes, this drop also contains a sole Warrior token styled after a Wakandan warrior.

Thwip! But That's Not All

The Secret Lair drops are expected to go on sale November 4th, 2024, with a retail price for each of:

  • Non-foil: $39.99 USD
  • Rainbow foil: $49.99 USD

Wizards of the Coast has noted that you'll receive one Arcane Signet as "Earth's Mightiest Emblem" with each $199 spent on Marvel Superdrop products while supplies last. Terms and conditions apply.

Wizards also mentions aspects of the Secret Lair shopping experience:

"These drops are available in limited quantities. While there's no hard end date to the sale, we do plan to clean up the storefront from time to time and remove products that have been around for a while."

As an additional announcement nearing the end of the New York Comic-Con panel, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the 2025 tentpole Magic X Marvel expansion set will be based on Marvel's Spider-Man properties.

We didn't get too much more than that, but it's a safe bet that with this being a set, you'll likely see the characters you're hoping for, heroes and villains all!

All in all, this panel was exactly what many players expected in terms of superheroes and their Magic-centric power levels. At the same time, it provided announcements that came from left field.

And that's not all: attendees of Friday's panel didn't go home emptyhanded. All in attendance were provided a parting gift of an exclusive NYCC promo, a Doctor Strange Counterspell.

And for fans of Magic or Marvel still heading to NYCC, stop by the Marvel booth at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday for some Magic-related giveaways.
