Netflix Magic TV Show Confirmed Back In Production

Josh Nelson • September 20, 2024

For years, we have heard talk about a Magic: The Gathering television show in the works.

Produced by Netflix with the Russo Brothers originally named as showrunners, this show has gone in and out of the public perception without so much as a production timeline.

Nine days ago, on September 10th, the purported voice actor for Gideon Jura, Brandon Routh, stated an implication that the project was canceled.

Many news outlets jumped on the chance to report this as a definitive cancelation, but Netflix seems to have other ideas.

On September 19th, IGN reported that Netflix has tossed the Magic community the smallest of bones during their Geeked Week event by providing us with teaser art and an announcement that production is underway for the show.

We Are SO Back, Netflix

On the night of September 19th, the Twitter account @NetflixGeeked tweeted the news.

To confirm, the official Twitter account for Magic, @wizards_magic, reposted this claim, lending complete and total confirmation that this report is true.

Previously (in the long-past year of 2022), a few very sparse details emerged about this project.

One such detail was that Gideon Jura, voiced by Routh, was to be the main character of this animated show.

Beyond this, Netflix has left us extremely bereft of any morsel of information, until tonight.

What new details have emerged include the new showrunner, Terry Matalas. Matalas has worked on shows such as Star Trek: Picard, and the television adaptation of the film 12 Monkeys.

While this is a few degrees off from the Russos' various film credits for Marvel Studios, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Avengers: EndgamePicard is a prolific filmographic credit and thus nothing to sniff at on its own merits.

Matalas had this to say about their involvement:

"It has been an absolute dream collaboration with Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast, and the brilliant Patrick Osborne to bring the many worlds of Magic: The Gathering to streaming. Those new to this sprawling saga will learn what millions of fans who play every day already know. Magic is the ultimate storytelling sandbox, brimming with iconic, complex characters, extraordinary mind-bending powers, and portals to every genre imaginable. It is also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all unite and become heroes together."
- Terry Matalas, MAGIC: THE GATHERING Showrunner

Furthermore, Matalas is also showrunning a Marvel Studios project - the Vision TV series, starring Paul Bettany in the titular role.

As this news is mere minutes old at the time of this article's conception, details are still coming through. Stay tuned for more Netflix Magic news!
