Mystery Booster 2 Contents Fully Revealed By Wizards
On Friday, August 9th, Wizards of the Coast revealed the full contents of Mystery Booster 2, a convention-exclusive product for Magic: The Gathering. There are over 1,800 cards nestled within the gamut of the entire release. These include many surprising picks, some of which have never seen a paper printing before. What exactly is inside? Let's take a look!
What's In A Mystery Booster 2 Pack?
According to the rundown of the contents of an average pack of Mystery Booster 2, hosted on the official DailyMTG news hub, packs work similarly to how they did with their predecessors from Mystery Booster 1. The layout is as such:
- 10 Commons or uncommons
- 2 Cards of each color
- 1 Multicolor, artifact, or common or uncommon land
- 1 Rare or mythic rare
- 1 Future Sight frame card
- There is a 60% chance for a rare or mythic rare.
- Less than 5% of Future Sight frame cards appear in traditional foil.
- In less than 1% of boosters, this slot is replaced with a traditional foil acorn Alchemy card.
- 1 White-bordered card
- There is a 40% chance for a rare or mythic rare.
- 1 Playtest card
There are so many cards within the first three categories that we can't really get too deep into that section. As such, it might behoove you to refer to DailyMTG's breakdown of those for more information. However, this article will truly shine when breaking down the rest of the cards in the pack.
The final three cards in a given pack of MB2 can best be classified into "Futureshifted" cards (also known as Future Sight frame cards), White-bordered cards, and Playtest cards. These three categories are where the differences from MB1 start to take hold because MB1 did not have Futureshifted cards or cards with white borders. While they contained Playtest cards, they were distinct from the selection in this release. Furthermore, some cards from Alchemy, a feature specific to Magic Arena also show up in these card slots, albeit rarely.
Without further ado, let's delve into some of the three categories of cards that make Mystery Booster 2 so enticing!
Futureshifted cards, AKA Future Sight frame cards
Each pack of Mystery Booster 2 will contain a card in the Future Sight special frame. These have a low chance of appearing in a foil treatment. Below is but a small selection of the cards you could find in this card slot normally:
Futureshifted Variation #1: Vanguard Legends
Beyond the "norm" (a term here used loosely) of the pack, packs of Mystery Booster 2 have a 5% chance of yielding Futureshifted cards in a foil treatment. There are 15 cards exclusive to this foiling. Of these, the most notable could be said to be the legendary creatures with art from the Vanguard set, some of which are below:
Futureshifted Variation #2: Alchemy Cards
As if this particular card slot wasn't full enough, there is a chance to get cards from Magic Arena's Alchemy subset in the Futureshifted slot! These cards are even rarer than the foil Futureshifted variant, making them all the more sought after by die-hard collectors. Please kindly note that these cards use the "acorn-stamped" treatment to denote that they are not legal in Eternal formats, including Commander. Below is a small selection of what you could find when opening one of these 1%-chance cards:
White-Bordered Cards
The next special treatment found in packs of Mystery Booster 2 that we'd like to bring up is white-bordered cards. From the very beginning of Magic: The Gathering, white-bordered cards have been ever-present. To many, they may look garish, but to others, they provide a sublime sense of nostalgia. To appeal to those with a nostalgic sense of longing, or even those with a memetic sense of humor, Wizards has printed cards with white borders in MB2. Below is a small selection of what you might find there:
Playtest Cards
Finally, we can't possibly write an article about a Mystery Booster product without bringing up the final card slot: Playtest cards! These cards fall into territory for Magic where they can't be printed for one reason or another. Either they're too strong, too goofy, violate IP law, or are otherwise too divisive for the rules to handle. There are a ton of cases for each, so we would prefer to keep this last bit fairly brief. Here are a few of the playtest cards you might find in a pack of MB2:
A final note on Playtest cards: To our count, there are at least two Playtest cards that were designed by Magic Invitational Champions. Those two cards are shown below:
Now Less Of A Mystery?
With that, we wrap up our coverage of the treatments found in packs of Mystery Booster 2. If you want to pick up a booster box of this release, you'll have two options: you can either go to a MagicCon event in-person and pick packs up there via the Draft events, or you can buy a Festival In A Box, which will contain a booster box of the release. These boxes contain 24 packs of MB2 and are sure to give you a trip down memory lane.
