Mono Y Mono with The Color Pie Council - Decked Out EDH Gameplay Breakdown

VeggieWagon • March 20, 2023

The Jedi Council, The Zion Council, The Future Council. All pale in comparison to the Color Pie Council. The five members of the council are Wizards of the Coast game designers and each is assigned one of the colors of Magic. They decide the identity, mechanics, and flavor of that color that is inextricably linked with the definition of the game, itself.

And Decked Out said we could beat them at their own game. In the latest Decked Out EDH gameplay episode, MTGNerdGirl and VeggieWagon take on Megan Smith and Chris Mooney, the Color Pie Councilors for green and white. Can they paint with all the colors of the WIN?

GREEN

Megan's Selvala, Heart of the Wilds deck leverages green's greatest strength: uh... strength. Selvala allows her to play powerful creatures early and turns those drops into draws. She aims to keep the pressure up with massive beats, like Apex Devastator, and plentiful resources to trample through for the final win.

WHITE

With a fistful of cards they designed, Chris is here to do what white does best. That's right; draw cards! Using white's recent access to card draw, they plan to convert creature tokens into card advantage using Welcoming Vampire and similar effects. A wide board and team buffs are their path to victory.

BLACK

Something something life is a resource! NerdGirl has a plan to pay life and sacrifice creatures, only to replace them twice over with her commander, Ayara, First of Locthwain. Black leaves nothing off the table, using massive payoffs like Bolas's Citadel to pull ahead. NerdGirl is hoping the life-draining effects in the deck will keep her alive until she's taken over.

BLUE

Veggie is prepared to cause problems, threaten counterspells, and come out on top. The player with the most cards always wins, right? He's not worried about his opponents' threats since he can counter, bounce, and steal them to keep everyone off-balance until he makes a big play for a sneaky (but well-planned) triumph.

How It Played Out

The Green Monster - The Early Game

Mono means one! Megan ramps with a pair of one-cost dorks, Chris drops Legion's Landing, and NerdGirl sets up a Warlock Class. Megan's fast mana leads to an early Elder Gargaroth, which Veggie Wrong Turns to Chris's control, hoping to make an ally. NerdGirl is not happy, and worse yet she finds herself missing land drops even with a Phyrexian Arena in play.

A Token of My Gratitude - The Mid Game

With the help of their new Gargaroth, Chris establishes their token engine using Bennie Bracks, Zoologist and Rumor Gatherer. Megan and NerdGirl fight to keep Chris's board in check while Veggie just kind of hangs out I guess. Thorn Mammoth looks like a possible answer from Megan until it's shut down by Flawless Maneuver. Finally, NerdGirl digs out a Damnation to clean the slate.

Gary the One... - The Late Game

Veggie begins to develop his own board with Docent of Perfection, but when he taps out to draw, it eats a kill spell from NerdGirl. Idol of Oblivion and Sun Titan help Chris to rebuild, and NerdGirl stabilizes with Gray Merchant of Asphodel, knocking out Veggie for exact-sies on her Warlock Class trigger. Some life-total politics and a surprise Jailbreak turn the Color Pie Councilors on NerdGirl, and a comically bad d20 roll from Ancient Brass Dragon seals her doom. Chris clears the remaining blockers with By Invitation Only to swing for the win!

White is now the best color in Commander(?).
