BENSON, IN – Confusion muddled the workings of a local music venue after one employee published an aggressive mono-black Magic: The Gathering deck list thinking it was the lineup for an upcoming metal show. Santiago Borknagar was looking to impress his manager, Ingrid Ensiferum, by finishing the festival’s promotional work . “Ingrid usually handles all the marketing for live events, but she was out with a nasty stomach bug” said Santiago “I had her Canva login and the full list of bands was sitting on top of her keyboard, so I figured…why not?” Ingrid, who could not be reached for comment, is the mastermind of this event which launched only last year. According to her online bio she is “into all things heavy, including many genres of metal, old horror movies, and satanic trading card games. 😈 ” Santiago recounts that he didn’t initially recognize any of the listed acts, but chalked it up to his relative inexperience with metalcore.

Borknagar had some hesitation but finished creating the festival poster and put the full schedule up on social media. “I was initially confused that all of the bands started between 1pm and 4pm” Santiago explained “but with three different stages I thought the event must simply be fast and furious.” The first iteration of the festival was called “Benson Metalcore Fest” but the new name, “Suicide Black”, struck Santiago as a lot more memorable and evocative. Fans online agreed.

“This list looks so aggro!” One Instagram follower commented. “I’m taking this to my next monthly!” Another poster replied. Some people responded with confusion or non-sequiturs, including several individuals asking “if gold borders were allowed”. Santiago said he was unsure how to respond to these inquiries, but the event sold out in under two minutes, so he was certain Ingrid would be stoked when she got back.
