MagicCon Vegas - Every Reveal From Foundations & 2025

Josh Nelson • October 25, 2024

On Friday, October 25th, Wizards of the Coast revealed many new Magic: The Gathering-centered developments at MagicCon Vegas.

These reveals span in scope from potentially expected/anticipated to surprising and highly impactful (whether for better or for worse we will leave that for you to decide).

Nevertheless, we are duty-sworn to get these reveals into the minds and eyes of our readers straight from scenic Las Vegas, Nevada. Without further ado, let's take a look!

The Foundations of Magic Con Vegas 2024

Our first set of reveals are so expansive that they honestly deserve their own article, but there's so much to discuss that we needed to account for time. Foundations, the new Magic Core Set analog that will presumably remain in Standard rotation up through 2029, is not your average core product.

Within its current scope, it contains a dedicated starter product (the first in year at this point, 2-player starter sets notwithstanding), the Beginner Box, and its own full-fledged JumpStart subset.

Within the various introductory materials, JumpStart takes up a major part of the methodology Wizards will use to introduce new and returning players to the game. Packs of JumpStart will feature in the Beginner Box introductory product mentioned above.

The Foundations Starter Collection, which has a ton of helpful cards and accessories for new and returning players, including a click-down life counter.

The Reveals of Foundations

But it's never the façade of the product that matters when playing Magic, right? It's the inside that counts. With that, here are a bunch of the newly-revealed cards from the main set for Foundations!

Of note, Zul Ashur has been quoted in multiple pieces of Magic flavor text, so is likely to be seen as a flavor win for many Vorthos lore-enthusiasts. Moving on!

Foundational Era Announced At MagicCon Vegas

As mentioned earlier, Foundations is set to be produced for non-rotation up until 2029. However, this information also comes with a slew of huge announcements that don't even have to do with the new sets coming after!

For one thing, with Foundations, the manufacturer-suggested retail price (or MSRP) is finally returning to Magic: The Gathering products. Hold your applause. Hold it. Just a little longer. Little more... Okay, now you can cheer.

Beyond this magnificent new development, there are some housekeeping shifts.

For example, Standard set rotation will now shift to a calendar-based timeline, with rotations occurring at the start of every calendar year. This shift will begin in 2027 to account for the current Standard environment and its implications.

Next, all formats are being re-divided into two major categories: Eternal legal, and "All-formats" legal.

This doesn't necessarily mean that Standard, Modern, or Pioneer are being phased out or anything; it seems more like a re-classification of definitions for clarity.

Finally, the Universes Beyond initiative rears its head for the first time in this article: Starting in 2025 (so not counting Secret Lair Magic X Marvel, for instance) and going forward, all Universes Beyond releases will be all-formats legal.

You read this correctly; Universes Beyond is now cemented in Magic for the foreseeable future, especially because now, there will be a 50/50 split between Magic-setting expansion sets and Universes Beyond ones every year.

With that, let's look at one of these new Universes Beyond tentpole releases!

Magic X Final Fantasy (June 13th, 2025)

We don't have a ton of information about the Final Fantasy collaboration yet, but we figure we should break the news before going much further into this presentation.

This Universes Beyond release is a tentpole set release, meaning it is a fully-integrated Magic expansion. It releases on June 13th of 2025. While we don't have any cards to show for it yet, there is a fair amount of art for it already available.

If you like this art, be aware that there's much, much more to come. Magic X Final Fantasy incorporates elements from each Final Fantasy mainline game from FFI through the new FFXVI; as a result, it will be the single largest collection of Final Fantasy art in one game. That seems pretty awesome!

Aetherdrift (February 14th, 2025)

Going into some slightly closer sets, Aetherdrift, the "racing" set alluded to late last year, comes out on February 14th, 2025.

Spanning three planes, this enormous multiplanar race pits many characters against each other to earn a prize that may or may not grant them a planeswalker spark.

Chandra is determined to win the race. Nissa is still discontented without a spark. Daretti is probably in it for himself, and Fblthp is still nowhere to be seen (and as such isn't appearing in this preview article... sorry!).

We have three cards revealed from Aetherdrift, but we also have a ton of cool new art.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm (April 4th, 2025)

Between Aetherdrift and Final Fantasy lies Tarkir: Dragonstorm.

Releasing on April 4th, 2025, Tarkir: Dragonstorm is a revisiting of the plane of Tarkir, which when we last fully visited was rocked by a major timeline shift.

According to Wizards of the Coast, "Tarkir: Dragonstorm will deliver on two important elements: factionalized clans and gameplay and Dragons now reborn. Dragons are pouring out through Dragonstorms all over Tarkir, and players will see the return of Sarkhan and Ugin."

Whether this means either Ugin or Sakhan respectively have lost their planeswalker sparks or regained them remains to be seen. It's safe, however, to expect a ton of draconic goodness.

We don't have any cards associated with Tarkir: Dragonstorm yet, but here is some sweet art:

Edge of Eternities (August 1st, 2025)

The final set release we know of that we have images for is the space-opera-inspired set, Edge of Eternities. The set releases on August 1st, 2025, and follows a group of salvagers as they traverse Sothera, a distant galaxy centered around a collapsing star. According to Wizards of the Coast, "players will visit The Edge, a science fantasy setting that sits outside of the Multiverse, bordering the entirety of the Blind Eternities. In the Edge, there are stars of mana and aether, worlds that orbit them, and spaceships that travel between solar systems."

Spider-Man And Other News

While we don't have more information surrounding the Magic X Marvel collaboration leading us to Spider-Man, we do know that it follows Edge of Eternities in the release order.

After that, we are due for a third Universes Beyond release; all details about it are yet unknown. However, we know it's set to come out in 2025 as well.

Finally, this is a bit of a prophecy fulfilled, but we also get Secret Lair X Spongebob Squarepants in 2025. Are you ready, kids?!?

With that, we conclude this preview article. It was a huge news day, and we are thankful to Wizards of the Coast for allowing us to cover it.

But let's now hear from you, dear readers. Arrrrr you excited for any of their upcoming 2025 releases? Sound off below!
