Japanese Site Reveals Two Duskmourn: House Of Horror Cards
Late on the night of June 27th, the Japanese hub for Magic: The Gathering news revealed a slew of new art for Duskmourn: House of Horror. Not only that, they revealed two new cards from the set! Naturally, we're here to take a good look and analyze what we can of the new cards and what they mean for the release.
This news comes with information surrounding their showcase treatment for Duskmourn. According to the website's blurb about the showcase treatment:
[...]we also want the art to be set apart from what you'd normally see on a Magic card. [...] When conceptualizing these cards, we felt the frame should "get out of the way" to let the art hit with full force. After many iterations and reviews with our Japan office, we created what you see above. The outlines hint at the shapes of a card frame, serving as a subtle nod to keep Magic present while preserving maximum visual impact.
This "frameless" showcase frame also receives a new foil treatment. The new "fracture" foils will only be on the Japanese borderless showcase cards. However, the article fails to specify if that includes English-language cards using the frame. The article says of this:
We wanted to make sure the foil matched well with the varying Japanese art styles, so we spent two years testing different foil types and running test print runs with multiple concepts until ultimately falling in love with fracture foil.
According to the article, Collector Boosters from Duskmourn will generally contain English cards and Japanese versions of the Showcase cards at a 2:1 ratio. The exception for this is the Japanese Collector Boosters, which will solely be in Japanese.
The cards, with all of their beautiful alternate art, also serve to tell us something about the set: its subthemes. From Enduring Tenacity's rules text and the card types for both revealed cards, it is implied that the set has an enchantment-matters subtheme. Furthermore, Everywhere lands feel very House of Leaves for the release. The butterfly set symbol also seems significant for the plot and premise of the set.
The announcement also came with several art pieces from Duskmourn, available below.
