Innistrad Remastered Previews (WeeklyMTG Stream)

Josh Nelson • December 3, 2024

With a month to go before Innistrad Remastered previews begin officially, the WeeklyMTG team revealed a bunch of new reprints from the set. On Tuesday, December 3rd, Wizards of the Coast conducted a Twitch stream where the reveals flowed like sweet, sanguine-red wine. But what cards were revealed? We covered a few recently, but with so many more, let's take a look!

Innistrad Remastered: Here's What We Know

The new set features cards from across the Innistrad planar setting of Magic. This includes many sets but also a few surprise entries that made sense in the setting. Mass Hysteria, despite being a card originally printed in Mirrodin, is in Innistrad Remastered. Furthermore, Invasion of Innistrad shows up in this set despite not strictly featuring in an Innistrad-set expansion.

There are a few other cases like these throughout Innistrad Remastered, but we haven't gotten those reveals just yet. However, this brings us to the next point...

Showcase Treatments

This set has a whole slew of different Showcase treatments, as is now the norm of the Booster Fun paradigm. As such, we would like to explain them for you:

Retro Frame (Bonus Sheet)

Innistrad Remastered has a bonus sheet of retro-framed cards.

These cards are lovingly rendered in the original frame of Magic: The Gathering. Some cards, in fact, only appear in this bonus sheet. For example, Liliana of the Veil and Snapcaster Mage, both cards that are much beloved by control players of various disciplines, officially feature in the set but only in the Retro frame.

Beyond this, for the first time in the game's history, double-faced cards will receive the Retro Frame treatment as well. Cards like Huntmaster of the Fells and Archangel Avacyn will be seen in the original Magic frame for the first time in this way.

Fang Showcase and Equinox Showcase

In Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow, Werewolf creatures and Vampire creatures, respectively, each received a new showcase frame: Equinox, for Werewolves in Midnight Hunt, and Fang, for Crimson Vow's Vampires. These Showcase treatments are returning for Innistrad Remastered! We have only seen a few of them at the moment, but that won't stop us from relaying them to you!

Borderless Showcase

Next, as with many sets these days, Innistrad Remastered features a Borderless Showcase treatment as well. This treatment spans across rarities and cards in general, such as Young Wolf, Thraben Inspector, and Spell Queller, among many others. This treatment is akin to what we have come to expect from other recent sets.

Movie Poster Showcase

Finally, the Movie Poster Showcase frame spans ten rares and mythic rares in Innistrad Remastered. It pays homage to classic horror films of the days of yore.

Of note, you can also find Edgar Markov, the centerpiece of this set, in a Movie Poster Showcase treatment. Edgar is the only card in the set that has a serialized variant. It, too, has this treatment, albeit in Double Rainbow Foil. "Fangs" a lot, Wizards!

Extra Morsels to Gnaw On

Innistrad Remastered also has Draft archetypes, if you're interested in engaging in Limited-style play with the set. The archetypes closely follow the usual archetypes in older Innistrad-centric expansions:

  • White-Blue: Spirits
  • Blue-Black: Zombies
  • Black-Red: Vampires
  • Red-Green: Werewolves
  • Green-White: Humans
  • White-Black: "Attrition" (token generation and grindy gameplay)
  • Black-Green: Morbid (death triggers and other payoffs for creatures dying)
  • Green-Blue: Self-Mill
  • Blue-Red: Spellslinger
  • Red-White: Aggro

Finally, Innistrad Remastered previews officially begin the week of January 6th. The reprinting of the cards in the set largely won't affect format legality except where Pauper and Pauper-adjacent formats are concerned. Finally, the manufacturer-suggested retail prices (MSRPs) for this set, by the pack, are as follows:

  • Play Booster: $6.99
  • Collector Booster: $29.99

Whatever Happened to the Transylvania Twist?
