Everything We Know From the Magic Showcase - Returns to Innistrad, Kamigawa, Dominaria and Universes Beyond
Greetings and welcome back to the Commander's Herald news update! Recent weeks were suspiciously so it was only fitting for a MASSIVE day of announcements. Tuesday featured so many announcements it could fill several updates so we will get right into the details now.
Release Schedule: 2021 and Beyond
The biggest piece of the announcement centered around the incredible amount of product coming out in the next 18+ months. These sets and supplemental product will feature new and old products alike.
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow will be the next major sets to come out and Innistrad will be home to the last full sets to come out in 2021. 2022 will feature the traditional four mainline Standard legal sets plus six additional products. These six products released as supplemental products will not be Standard legal but will be legal at your Commander pods.
To go along with Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow we were told of the Innistrad Double Feature which will be a draftable experience combining the two sets into one experience. More details on Innistrad Double Feature will be given on this product closer to the release.
Standard Releases for 2022
Receiving the lineup of Standard sets for 2022 was the highlight of the announcement stream as well. The cyberpunk themed Kamigawa Neon Dynasty will lead off 2022 to be followed by the crime riddled Streets of New Capenna. New Capenna will feature a return to five 3-color crime families to align with, sure to give players memories of Khans of Tarkir type draft experiences with rewards for investing in the family of choice.
Our return to Kamigawa and first time exploring New Capenna will come in the first and second quarters of 2022 respectively.
We will also be returning to the birth home to Magic: The Gathering. Dominaria United will be the third standard legal set exploring where Dominaria left off.
Following that we will see The Brothers War, a set showing the legendary war between characters Urza and Mishra. The Brothers War will chronicle the story in a different way that we saw it displayed in Antiquities. Aaron Forsythe described in the video "Antiquities was the viewpoint of finding the remains and looking back, (The Brothers War) will show it as it was happening." Players who enjoy the lore of the early game will be sure to enjoy many callbacks that are bound to happen. These sets will be released in the third and fourth quarters of 2022
Commander Collection Black
Another "return," we will be making is back to the Commander Collection product, this time exploring the color black. Green was the first color featured and as before will feature some prominent reprints sure to please. The color shifted arts of Sol Ring and Command Tower lead the new arts in the release.
Supplemental Sets Galore!
Not to be outdone by 2021, 2022 has several auxiliary sets already lined up. Fans of Unstable and other un-sets will be pleased with the announcement of Unfinity, a space carnival themed silver border set. Un-sets traditionally are not Commander legal as the mechanics break normal game rules. As a limited experience however, the set is sure to be a hit.
The "retro-futuristic fun meets a space carnival," is to be released in Draft and Collector Booster packs in the second quarter of 2022.
Continuing the Dungeons & Dragons partnership, Battle for Baldur's Gate: Commander Legends will follow up Unfinity. Battle for Baldur's Gate will return to the Commander Draft format we first saw with Commander Legends set in the iconic world in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Expect to see the set release in the second quarter of 2022.
Two more supplemental sets return to round out the year with Double Masters 2022 and Jumpstart 2022. Double Masters 2022 will follow suit with the original featuring two foils and rare or mythic cards in each pack. Double Masters featured a hefty amount of reprints and the sequel is promised to do the same. Jumpstart 2022 will give us another experience with the format we saw in the first Jumpstart. The ease of access into the format plus new cards made the original quite popular among players of all types. Look for Jumpstart 2022 to round out the year.
Universes Beyond and More
Wrapping up the announcement stream we were given a glimpse of the upcoming Universes Beyond products.
Commander preconstructed decks featuring a Warhammer 40,000 theme will hit shelves in 2022. These decks will feature Space Marines and other factions found in the Warhammer universe.
Players also were able to see the first peek at The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth, the crossover set releasing in 2023. This will be a full set yet not Standard legal but will be legal akin to Modern Horizons I & II being legal in non-rotating formats. The set will feature many iconic characters and moments from the Lord of the Rings setting. The set will also come with four Commander preconstructed decks and special Secret Lair drops to round out the experience.
Speaking of Secret Lairs, several crossover drops were announced with other unexplored partnerships. Fortnite and Street Fighter both had drops announced with some preview art. We were not given many details outside preview art capturing the tone both properties are known for.
There really was a LOT to take in from the announcement. Players of all types are buzzing about the months and years to come and the range of products we saw. Let us know in the comments what you're most excited about !
