Every Card Revealed During The Murders At Karlov Manor Preview Stream

Josh Nelson • January 16, 2024

Today marks the beginning of preview season for Murders at Karlov Manor, the newest expansion for Magic: The Gathering! The kickoff stream on YouTube and Twitch detailed new cards, mechanics, and products for the murder mystery set. We got this information from Wizards of the Coast for coverage, so let's take a look at what to expect from the new release!

Murders at Karlov Manor's New Card Mechanics

Here are the new card mechanics for Murders at Karlov Manor, alongside some new cards to illustrate them.

Suspect (New Mechanic From Murders At Karlov Manor)

We begin our analysis with suspect, an ability word that designates creatures, predictably, as suspects in a crime. A suspected creature has menace and is unable to block. Suspicion also opens doors for a worse fate for that creature:

Of course, there are also ways to clear a creature of suspicion, as Deadly Complication shows us:

At this time we can't presume that all the means of clearing suspicion will be positive; after all, creature and player removal are great means of suspicion removal. However, they seem so far to provide a relatively neutral payoff, based on the above card.

Disguise and Cloak (New Mechanics From Karlov Manor)

The next set of abilities presumably go hand-in-hand. Disguise is a new morph variant, providing the same facedown colorless 2/2 creature. It can still be turned face-up at any time for its disguise cost, but it now comes with ward 2 as an added bonus!

At the moment we are writing this article, we also know of the action keyword "cloak". We know it is tied in with disguise, but at this moment no more information is known about it. Appropriately enough, it is cloaked for the moment, but you can probably find that information in today's stream.

The Case Subtype (New Mechanic From Karlov Manor)

Next, please allow us to introduce you to the Case enchantment subtype. Cases are enchantments with three abilities:

  • The first ability is a payoff for playing the card, such as an ability that triggers upon entering the battlefield, or a static ability.
  • The second ability is a "Solve" ability, which looks for criteria to cause the Case to become "solved" at the next end step.
  • The third ability is a payoff for solving the Case.

We have two examples of Cases to show you:

Collect Evidence (New Mechanic From Karlov Manor)

Collect evidence is the next new mechanic from this set. It's another action keyword, utilizing a numerical parameter to impose a cost. In this case, to "collect evidence N" is to exile cards with a minimum total mana value of N from a player's graveyard. For example:

Axebane Ferox, a new card from MTGMKM.

As is customary at this point, Wizards has also created a legendary creature that deals with collecting evidence:

Izoni, Center of the Web, a new card from Murders at Karlov Manor.

They've also created some minor support for this ability. You don't have to take our word for it, but you can take hers:

Kaya, Spirits' Justice, a new planeswalker card from Murders at Karlov Manor.

Investigate (A Returning Mechanic)

Finally, we have the "investigate" action keyword. To investigate, simply create a Clue token, which are artifacts with the Clue subtype. They have the ability "{2}, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card". They're a simple, fair source of card advantage, and this set is chock-full of things that make Clues. For example:

Aupicious Arrival, a new card from MTGMKM.

Kellan, Inquisitive Prodigy, a new card from Murders at Karlov Manor.

Teysa, Opulent Oligarch, a new card from Murders at Karlov Manor.

This is relevant to the entire "mystery" theme of Karlov Manor, but it also means it lends itself well to many new payoffs, like these two Goblins seen below:

Crime Novelist, a new card from MTGMKM.

Other Notes From The New Set

Murders at Karlov Manor marks the first instance of the use of the Play Booster product model. This booster product integrates parts of Set Boosters into the Limited-format play model of Draft Boosters. It also bumps the price of Limited play upwards a bit but provides more rares than an average Draft experience as a result.

On Magic Arena, Play Boosters will also fully replace Draft Boosters. There will be a few differences, such as some changes to The List. This also means The List, as well as Special Guests, will debut on Arena with Karlov Manor. Furthermore, the price of drafting on Arena will not increase.

Players can find out more about the story behind this set by visiting RavnicaDetectiveAgency.com to take part in Wizards of the Coast's augmented-reality game (or ARG). Are you excited about visiting Karlov Manor?
