Terrian, World Tyrant
by Nicholas Gregory

Ooze the Best Dinosaur? Terrian!

Not all dinos are carnivores; unlike Tyrox from last week, Terrian, World Tyrant

is a beefcake. Finishing the tour of the Muraganda Vanilla legends with a thud is the gigantic herb- or omnivorous (not sure which is canon) Dinosaur Ooze. It has monstrous base stats to go with a hefty converted mana cost, which a green deck can easily leverage into a strong stompy shell. Prepare to watch your opponents get crushed underfoot!

High-Power Creatures

In green, we want the beats to start early and often. Ideally, we'd start with a mana dork and then proceed to add big, beefy bodies to the board turn after turn until our opponents are dead. With enough of those bodies, including our commander, we won't run out of creatures anytime soon.

For the most part, we want our big beefy beatsticks to single-handedly qualify as a board state, like Tyrranax Rex

. Some of them grow into the role, like Champion of Lambholt
, or offer a bit of protection, like Prowling Serpopard
. The synergy between these large creatures makes our herd of dinos truly strong.

Verdurous Gearhulk

might not get the love that Torrential and Noxious get in EDH, or even Combustible, for that matter, but it was certainly a powerhouse back when it was in Standard. Here, we have a bit of a counters subtheme, but the bigger goal of the Gearhulk is to grant counters to other creatures, especially already large ones.

While we have enough threats that we don't need to draw deep into the deck, as our topdecks are fairly strong, it's still helpful to weave some card draw into the deck. Garruk's Packleader

helps us chain large creatures, and Soul of the Harvest keeps our hand is full, even if we get wrathed after.

Ramp

Drumhunter

is another sneaky form of card draw. In addition to ramping out large creatures, the Naya-colored mana dorks in Alara provide bonuses for making the large creatures they enable. In the case of Drumhunter
, we're drawing an extra card every turn, which we can certainly use but don't want to devote spare slots to.

Fanatic of Rhonas

and Whisperer of the Wilds
are both mana dorks that give us a boost for making large creatures, helping us snowball advantage and skip from the early game to the end quickly.

Shaman of Forgotten Ways

is a mana dork that also provides a stealthy alternate win condition, acting as a Biorhythm
to sneak wins away from creature-light opponents.

Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma

provides a cost reduction for large creatures, exactly what this deck is focusing on. This helps us cast multiple creatures in a turn, as well as removing a level of commander tax, so our costly commander doesn't get shut off.

Board Effects

One of the dangerous aspects of stompy decks, and a big reason I hesitate to play them, is that they are susceptible to board stalls. While we can keep adding to the board, and some of our creatures do not have finite power, we need cards that grant our board evasion, like Roughshod Mentor

.

Garruk's Uprising

and Ohran Frostfang
also provide hidden card draw, although they are there primarily to give trample and deathtouch to our large creatures, ensuring that we rule combat, especially with the new combat rules from Magic Foundations.

Removal

Our removal choices are... non-traditional, to say the least. Like with the rest of the deck, we want as many incidental bodies as possible. As a result, we use Druid of Purification

instead of Naturalize
, which can't ordinarily attack or block.

Beast Within

is one of the few noncreature spells in the deck, and is a bit of a concession to its flexibility and timing. Some cards are just too powerful to ignore, and the body it leaves behind is too small for us to care. In a pinch, we can even use it on our own permanents to make a blocker.

The general plan is to make ramp the first couple of turns, then start beating in with large creatures and break board stalls if and when they arise, via board buffs or timely removal spells.
